Solicitors, Charles Lucas & Marshall and Newbury department store, Camp Hopson, are moving on to the next stage of the store’s retailing evolution.
Charles Lucas & Marshall have provided legal support for the arrangement of the ground floor lease to River Island - due to open shortly - and is now advising on the letting of a second unit at the store in Northbrook Street which will be leased to a major clearing bank.
The £8 million pound redevelopment includes the creation of new independent units within the store with building work going on for two years and scheduled to finish this summer.
“The strategy is to diversify our company so it is not so reliant on retail return,” says Jonathan Hopson. “We are delighted the work on the River Island lease is finished and we can move forward to the next stage.”
Hemant Amin and David Thomas, Charles Lucas & Marshall commercial property partners have provided Camp Hopson with property advice and the firm will also be working with the store on other commercial issues.
“As a family business there are specific areas we need to address,” says Jonathan Hopson. “With over 120 shareholders we want to be proactive about succession planning and communicating with shareholders.”
Charles Lucas & Marshall’s family business team will be working with Camp Hopson once the store refurbishment is complete.
“There are various technical legal problems which affect family businesses from time to time,” says Hemant Amin. “However family businesses and business families have issues which are peculiar to them and require an approach that takes into account the interests of owners, management and employees.”
