| Code Will Keep Commercial Landlords on Their Toes | |
![]() Hemant Amin Solicitors, Charles Lucas & Marshall have welcomed a new code of good practice introduced for commercial landlords.
The Commercial Landlords Accreditation Scheme (CLAS) intends to provide a more tenant-friendly leasing system and will look to point businesses in the direction of high quality landlords.
It includes a standards board to ensure objectivity towards both landlords and tenants as well as a complaints procedure and a chance to take disciplinary action against landlords who break the principles of the code.
“A lot of property management is based on principles of good estate management built up over many years,” says Hemant Amin, commercial property partner at Charles Lucas & Marshall. “This scheme is taking something from these foundations.”
Launched by the British Property Federation, the Code is voluntary but shows members are committed to the same quality standards. Members will be able to display the logo on letters and marketing materials.
“The Code will be useful to smaller landlords who want to follow good practice and gain some credit for doing so,” added Hemant Amin.
Total investment in UK commercial property exceeded 27 billion pounds in the first six months of 2007.
