| Asbestos Study Day Brings Together UK’s Leading Experts | |
![]() Brigitte Chandler Many of the UK’s leading experts in the treatment of mesothelioma, the asbestos related cancer will be speaking at a study day in Bristol this week (23 March) to discuss progress in the treatment of the disease.
The conference has been organised by lawyer, Brigitte Chandler, for the charity, the Swindon & South West Asbestos Group. Brigitte is one of the country’s most experienced solicitors in the field of asbestos related claims and is a partner at the Swindon office of law firm, Charles Lucas & Marshall.
One of the founders of the Swindon & South West Asbestos Group, Brigitte Chandler has been strongly involved in campaigning for the legal rights of sufferers and their families.
Around 50 respiratory consultants, lung cancer nurse specialists and palliative care nurses from throughout the South West will be attending the conference which will discuss pain control for patients who develop mesothelioma or lung cancer as a result of coming into contact with asbestos.
Speakers include Dr Robin Rudd, consultant in respiratory medicine and medical oncology and co-director of mesothelioma research at St Bart’s Hospital, London, who will discuss recent trials involving chemotherapy.
Professor Tom Treasure from St Guy’s Hospital, London, will focus on the role of surgery and whether radical surgery offers a cure for mesothelioma patients.
Other speakers include Dr Derek Pounder, consultant anaesthetist and specialist in pain management at St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth and Dr Chris Higgs, a Consultant in palliative care at the Royal United Hospital, Bath.
The conference will finish with a presentation by Brigitte Chandler on how the law relates to mesothelioma and lung cancer caused by asbestos, focusing on the legal issues which the medical profession need to be aware of when dealing with patients.
“We are delighted so many of the top names in the country are speaking at the conference” says Brigitte Chandler. “We hope that this will ultimately be of benefit to patients who develop the illness.
“There is a lot of research being done into mesothelioma in this country as well as the prospect of new treatments and approaches to managing the disease. The conference will give everyone an overview of where we are at the moment.
“In view of the predicted increase in this disease over the next 10 to 15 years in the United Kingdom, everyone who works in this field is obviously anxious to do everything possible to provide the best advice and treatment available and this is what we are concentrating on.”
The meeting will take place at The Arnos Manor Hotel, Bristol.
