Hitachi Capital Manoeuvres Into Driving School Market

Lance Parker
Lawyers, Charles Lucas & Marshall have advised Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions on its acquisition of a specialist contract hire business for the driving school sector.
The Driving Instructor Centre in Leicestershire supplies adapted lease cars to driving instructors and driving schools throughout the UK. It supports Hitachi Capital's strategy of acquiring businesses in niche markets to compliment its existing services.
Lance Parker, corporate services lawyer and Hemant Amin, commercial property lawyer at Charles Lucas & Marshall headed up the deal, supported by Tom Walker, Peter Billyard and Paul Wilkinson.
The acquisition sees Hitachi Capital extending its range of bespoke services in cars, vans and specialist commercial vehicles.
"This is a key acquisition for us and supports our strategy of expanding into new markets that complement our existing business," says Simon Oliphant, chief executive of Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, based in Newbury.
"Culturally it is also a very good fit. Charles Lucas & Marshall did a first class job throughout the negotiations - and as always, provided the attention to detail which is critical for a transaction of this nature."
Lance Parker, head of Charles Lucas & Marshall's corporate services team, said the Hitachi Capital acquisition was one of several the firm was currently working on, despite the economic downturn.
"Business owners are thinking about the immediate future but also the longer term," he said. "This means many are re-examining their terms and conditions but also thinking about where they want to be in five years time.
"For some this may mean exiting the business while for others it is the signal to look around for acquisitions, mergers or different ways of managing their overheads."
