A Bath worker who has developed an asbestos related disease from working in Ministry of Defence dockyards has been awarded compensation.
Alan Cox of Lucklands Road, Weston Bath, was diagnosed with the illness in 2007 after suffering from pneumonia. The Ministry of Defence has agreed to an out of court settlement of £65,000 with Mr Cox also given the right to return for further damages should his health deteriorate.
His solicitor, Brigitte Chandler of Charles Lucas & Marshall and one of the UK's leading experts in asbestos related claims, said Mr Cox was one of thousands of former ship and dockyard employees who had been exposed to asbestos.
"Many of these people worked for the Ministry of Defence," she says. "I anticipate bringing these claims for many years to come."
Mr Cox worked for the MoD at Chatham Dockyards from 1940-1943 before joining the RAF. He returned to the Dockyards to complete his apprenticeship before transferring to the DG Ships Department in Admiralty Headquarters, Bath. In 1957 he transferred to the Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland.
He was exposed to asbestos during the two years he worked on the modernisation of HMS Caesar which included removing the asbestos lagging from pipes and boilers. While all the asbestos was being removed, Mr Cox was walking about the ship, checking and inspecting work.
"Throughout the project, Mr Cox was never given any protective clothing or warnings about the dangers of asbestos - despite knowledge of the dangers of asbestos being known since 1900," said Brigitte Chandler.
Mr Cox returned to work in Bath in 1975 and then retired from the MoD in 1984. Since his diagnosis two years ago he has been unable to continue his hobby of long walks and completing the regular 15 mile route from Bath to Bristol which he used to walk to keep himself fit.
