Solicitors, Charles Lucas & Marshall are warning that any businesses who want to register web domain names under the new ‘.eu’ address need to do it quickly – or risk losing out to other companies.
The European Commission has promised to give priority to companies with existing names if they register by 6 April 2006. Registration is being phased in with companies able to register now. Those first in the queue will be given priority.
“Many companies seem to be unaware of the changes and could end up seeing their domain name snatched in what could become a free for all after 6 April,” says Hemant Amin, partner at Charles Lucas & Marshall.
“They need to take advantage of this phased in registration period and register their business under the new ‘eu’ address.
“If not, they could be held to ransom by people who are snapping up domain names that correspond to their business, brands and trade marks.”
Companies can register through the European Registry of Internet Domain Names www.eurid.eu
