PRESS RELEASE – released 14th March 2012
Newbury Young Musicians advance to the next phase of Rotary’s Young Musician of the Year competition
Local young musicians, James Brockhurst, Bethany Coopey and Chloe Flynn who were successful in the recent Newbury Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year competition, took part in the second phase of this Rotary event on the 10th March at St Joseph’s School in Reading. This competition involves four phases before culminating in a grand final at the Bournemouth International Conference Centre in April where a national winner will be selected for both instrumental and for voice.
At the Reading event, which is the Rotary District 1090 final representing Berkshire and parts of Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire, ten individuals were in competition, four pianists including James, one flautist who was Chloe, one playing the trumpet and four vocalists including Bethany. After very stiff competition James (14) and Bethany (17) were selected as first in their classifications to go through to the next round, the Rotary South East Regional Final next Saturday the 17th March at 2 pm at The Baptist Church, Cranleigh, Guildford, Surrey. Both James and Bethany attend Trinity School.
The adjudicators, represented by Simon King, Mandy Kesel and Cynthia Crane provided feed back to all the competitors. In the case of James, who played two pieces by Rachmaninov, they described his performance as electrifying. Bethany was told she lit up the room as she sung “So in love” from Kiss me Kate by Cole Porter.
