I see that Newbury Magistrates Court is in the firing line again !!
Talks of downgrading to a “satellite” court are not good news for the future of our only remaining local court.
When I started off, we had criminal courts at Newbury, Hungerford and Lambourn, with Newbury Magistrates Court very often doubling up as an additional Crown Court for Reading. We also had a civil court at Newbury County Court and which served the local community very well.
These were all OUR ” local” courts”, serving local justice and local needs, and mostly presided over by local Magistrates with local knowledge.
Over time, our local courts slowly began to disappear, with courts being centralised elsewhere in Berkshire.
Firsly, Lambourn Magistrates Court disappeared, then Hungerford Magistrates Court, and then Newbury County Court, leaving Newbury Magistrates Court as our only remaining “local” court.
In recent years, for whatever reason, the days when Newbury Magistrates Court sat, began to to be cut back, and now being downgraded to a satellite court does not bode well at all.
It appears that less and less resources are being ploughed into Newbury Magistrates Court and one must now begin to fear for its survival.
I for one, would be sad if it ever closed- it was “the” court that got all the news and publicity in the heyday of the Greenham Common protestors and which served that era very well indeed.
Local justice is something that the Ministry of Justice does not appear to be interested in !
