Rotary Play Their Part For The Paralympics

On Sunday, the 19th August at West Mills, the Mayor of Newbury, Cllr Arthur Johnson greeted the Bruce Trust’s barge Diana, crewed by the Rotary Club of Newbury and skippered by Newbury President Rtn Roy Wood and also day guests from the local charity group “Buddies”. This day trip was the second of a special excursion in which the Rotary Clubs of Hungerford, Newbury and Thatcham are crewing day excursions for local charities while taking the barge along the Kennet and Avon canal section en route to and returning from, the Paralympic Games in London.

This is part of The Bruce Trust’s brilliant idea to take one of their boats which are specially designed to accommodate disabled people specifically to the London Paralympics, to facilitate accommodation for visiting guests between the 29th August and the 9th September.

Since the late 80’s, The Rotary Club of Newbury has utilized one of the Bruce Trust canal boats to take out local charities on day trips as part of their Community programme. To date in excess of 200 day trips have been provided enabling over 2000 charity members to enjoy the tranquility of canal barge travel and our local Kennet Valley scenery.

From Newbury, Diana will be taken by additional crews from Newbury & Thatcham Rotary Clubs to Burghfield, and then onward by The Bruce Trust down The River Thames, up the Regents Canal and into the Hertford Union Canal to its mooring place at Stratford during the Paralympics. While there, The Bruce Trust will provide low cost accommodation and free Paralympics tickets to disabled charity groups.

After the finish of the games, Diana will return to base at Little Bedwyn. Again on the return leg, from the 18th to the 21st September, additional groups from local charities will be able to enjoy a day on the canal courtesy of Hungerford, Newbury & Thatcham Rotary Clubs..

Diana is a specially-designed, purpose-built, wide-beam canal boat which can be used by disabled, disadvantaged or elderly people having wide-access ramps for boarding at the stern deck and a hydraulic lift down into the boat. The extra width of the boats provides excellent manoeuvrability for wheelchair users and they all have special built-in facilities.
