Leading regional law firms Coffin Mew and Charles Lucas & Marshall, have today announced that they are to merge, creating a legal services business with more than 270 years of combined experience across the central South.
The deal is a catalyst for Coffin Mew’s expansion in the South, taking the firm’s size to well over 200 employees across offices in London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton, Gosport and now Newbury, Wantage and Swindon.
Charles Lucas & Marshall will continue trading as such for the time being, and will be seeking to deepen and enhance its relationships with clients and contacts.
Miles Brown, CEO, commented: “This merger will make Coffin Mew one of the largest law firms in the region – and sets us firmly on track to achieve our target of being a £20m turnover company by 2020.
“The ethos of Charles Lucas & Marshall is wholly compatible with our own. There is also a great synergy between our mutual specialisms. We can now present a bigger and better private client offering and bolstered corporate service offer, as well as expertise in the agriculture sector.”

Contracts have been exchanged and it is anticipated that the merger will formally complete by the end of March 2017.

Christopher Brierley has joined Thames Valley law firm, Charles Lucas Marshall as head of its residential property team.
Previously a partner with north London firm, Farhi Jacob, he has been a practicing property lawyer for nine years and will lead Charles Lucas & Marshall’s residential property team across its offices in Newbury, Swindon and Wantage.
Charles Lucas & Marshall was one of the first firms in the UK to be accredited under the Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) – set up by the Law Society to provide the public with a recognized quality standard for conveyancing services. The scheme requires firms to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self-reporting, random audits and annual reviews.
“I am delighted to be joining a firm with such a an excellent reputation in all its regional offices – and my aim is to build on the great work being done by the team and identify how we can get even better,” said Christopher.
A volunteer with the Royal Air Force, Christopher is a flight lieutenant of his RAF branch in Ruislip and leads a squadron of ten staff and fifty air training cadets.

Elianne Edgington and Mark Chapman have joined the family law team at Newbury solicitors, Charles Lucas & Marshall.
Elianne was previously with Reading solicitors, Field Seymour Parkes and prior to that was a family lawyer at Newbury firm, Horsey Lightly for eight years.
Mark Chapman was previously with Basingstoke solicitors, Wills Chandler and has also worked for Oxford law firm, Darbys.
Both have specialized in family law since 2006 and are members of Resolution, the family law group committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes. Resolution promotes a non-confrontational approach to family problems which considers the needs of the whole family.
Thames Valley law firm, Charles Lucas & Marshall has elected Hemant Amin as its new managing partner.
The firm, which has offices in Newbury, Swindon, Wantage and Hungerford, has been operating in the Thames Valley for nearly 150 years. With clients throughout the south of England, it advises many of the region’s leading commercial businesses and high net worth individuals.
Hemant Amin, who joined the Charles Lucas & Marshall in September 1989 has been a member of the firm’s management board for ten years. He will continue as practice development partner as well as taking over as managing partner from Malcolm Poynter on 1 August.
Malcolm Poynter will continue to head up the firm’s commercial property team.
David Thomas, head of Charles Lucas & Marshall’s Wantage office was re-elected as finance partner.
