![]() Brigitte Chandler A new support group for wives and widows of asbestos sufferers is to be launched in Bath.
The group will meet monthly to provide friendship and support for asbestos sufferers and their families.
It will be run by the Swindon and South West Asbestos Group, a regional charity set up five years ago. The charity provides free information and advice to asbestos suffers and their families.
Karen Parsons of Westwood, Bradford Upon Avon whose husband recently died after developing mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, says the group will provide much-needed support to widows and their families.
"When you have just lost someone from asbestos disease, you need someone to talk to," she says. "The group will be very friendly and informal and the idea is that we will meet monthly for coffee, a meal and a chat."
The Swindon and South West Asbestos Group was set up by campaigning lawyer, Brigitte Chandler of Charles Lucas & Marshall, who has been representing asbestos sufferers and their families for over 20 years. There are now several support groups throughout the South-West.
"We have found that women who have lost a husband through asbestos disease or who have lived with someone with asbestos disease for many years are able to provide encouragement and help to those whose husbands have just been diagnosed," says Brigitte Chandler.
